Bandsaw Blade Length Calculator

A bandsaw blade is a loop that runs around two wheels. Its length follows from the wheel size and how far apart the wheels sit. Enter your measurements and check the answer against your manual before you order.

Measure two things, get a length

Enter your wheel diameter and the distance between the wheel centers. The sample numbers are examples, not a specific saw.

Formula: 2 × center distance + π × wheel diameter, with both wheels the same size.

This is geometry, not a fit guarantee. The wheel diameter should be measured where the blade rides (including any tire), and the blade length your saw actually accepts is the one in its manual. Treat the result as a cross-check for that number, not a replacement.

Measure twice. A small error in the center distance doubles in the blade length.

How the calculation works

For a two-wheel saw with wheels of the same size, the blade length is twice the distance between the wheel centers plus pi times the wheel diameter. In other words, the blade covers two straight runs between the wheels plus one full wrap around a wheel’s circumference. This calculator applies that formula and shows the result in inches, to the nearest eighth of an inch and in millimeters.

Why there is a range

Most saws let you slide the upper wheel to tension the blade, so the wheel center distance is not one fixed number. Measure it with the wheel at its lowest and highest tracking positions and enter both. The answer is the range of blade lengths the geometry allows. If your saw only gives one position, leave the longest box empty.

How to measure the wheels

Measure the diameter across the wheel where the blade runs, including any rubber tire. Measure the center distance from the middle of one axle to the middle of the other, along the line between them, with the wheels aligned. A tape or a straightedge helps. Take the measurements with the saw unplugged and the blade removed.

When this does not apply

The formula assumes two wheels of equal diameter. Three-wheel saws, wheels of different sizes and machines with idler wheels follow different geometry, so the result will not match them. Always compare the answer with the blade length your manual or the maker lists, and use the exact-model lookup in the blade size finder when your saw is a documented model.

What the result does not tell you

A matching length does not make a blade suitable for your saw or your cut. Width, thickness, tooth pitch and tooth form depend on the saw’s guides and wheels and on the material. This tool covers only the loop length.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate bandsaw blade length?

For a saw with two equal wheels, blade length is two times the distance between the wheel centers, plus pi times the wheel diameter. This page does the arithmetic from your measurements.

Is the result the exact blade length I should buy?

No. It is a geometric estimate that should land close to the length in your manual. Blades are sold in specific lengths, so use the manual or the maker’s listed length and treat this result as a cross-check.

Why does the blade length change with the tracking position?

Moving the upper wheel changes the center distance, and the length depends on that distance. A saw is designed to work within a range, and the blade length is chosen to sit inside it.

What if my saw has three wheels?

This formula does not apply. Three-wheel saws have different geometry, so use the blade length given by the maker.

Does this say which blade width or tooth count to use?

No. It only gives the length of the loop. Choose width, thickness and tooth pitch for your saw and the material you cut.
