Teeth per inch, or TPI, describes tooth density. It helps determine how many teeth contact the work and how much room is available between them for chips. Choosing it well starts with the section being cut, not simply the material’s name. Define the section that the teeth meet

Record material type and the thickness along the cut. For a solid rectangular piece, the engaged section can change when its orientation changes. For tubing, record wall thickness as well as outside dimensions. A large tube is not equivalent to a solid bar of the same diameter; treating them as interchangeable can lead to an unsuitable coarse pitch.

If your stock list includes both thin sections and substantial solids, expect to need more than one pitch. One inexpensive multipack with identical blades is useful only if those blades match the recurring work. A mixed pack can be equally wasteful if most of its pitches have no application in your shop. Buy from a cutting list instead of from the apparent value of the assortment.

Balance tooth engagement and chip space

Finer pitch brings more teeth into a short section. Coarser pitch provides larger spaces between teeth, which can help carry the chips produced in thicker material. Excessively fine pitch can crowd a cut with teeth and restrict chip clearance; excessively coarse pitch can leave too few teeth sharing the load.

Use the blade maker’s selection chart for the actual material and section. Do not turn a general rule about tooth engagement into an unconditional number for every machine and profile. The chart is usually more specific than a retailer’s wood or metal label, and a supplier can resolve borderline cases such as thin-walled structural shapes or mixed-section work.

What a pair of TPI numbers means

A marking such as 8/12 describes variable pitch rather than a user-adjustable setting. Tooth spacing varies around a repeating pattern. That makes variable pitch a feature worth considering, particularly for metal profiles, but it does not remove the need to select a suitable pitch range.

Compare blades by their full intended application. A variable-pitch blade aimed at structural metal is not automatically a replacement for a woodworking blade merely because the loop dimensions match. Tooth material, shape, backing thickness, and the machine’s available blade speed must also agree with the job.

Separate finish expectations from cutting capacity

A finer blade may be attractive when the visible cut face matters, but finish is not purchased through TPI alone. A workpiece requiring a glue-ready surface may still need another machining step. Buying too fine a blade to avoid sanding can make thick-stock cutting less efficient without eliminating that finishing work.

Write down whether your priority is rough dimensioning, close-to-line shape cutting, or a cleaner edge in relatively thin material. Then choose an appropriate pitch within the manufacturer’s guidance. On a small saw, a blade that clears chips effectively can be more useful than an unusually fine blade marketed for smoothness.

Before ordering, check that the chosen pitch is actually offered in your exact length, width, and thickness. If it is unavailable, ask about a custom weld or a suitable alternative geometry; do not casually substitute a different loop size. Keep one known suitable spare for the material you cut most frequently, and add another pitch only when a recurring section justifies it.

For example, suppose the next project alternates between thin-wall square tube and solid aluminum blocks. The outside width may be similar, but the teeth encounter very different sections. Send both descriptions to the supplier and ask whether one pitch is a reasonable compromise or two are preferable. That question produces a more useful answer than asking which blade cuts metal fastest, because it exposes the real tradeoff before money is spent.
